AP vs Telangana JCJ Syllabus 2026: Common Core, Extra Subjects, and a Dual-Prep Plan
Updated: Sep 25
Aravind Rao’s Judicial Academy | Hyderabad
A large number of our students now write both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Junior Civil Judge exams. The papers look similar on the surface: screening test, three written papers, a qualifying English paper, then viva. The statute lists are not the same.
This article compares:

Telangana: Notification No. 45/2025-RC dated 01.12.2025
Andhra Pradesh: Schedule–A of the A.P. State Judicial (Service and Cadre) Rules, 2026
Use it as a preparation map. Always re-check the official notification before you freeze your notes.
1. Pattern first — then the syllabus
Item | Telangana JCJ | Andhra Pradesh JCJ |
Screening | CBT, 100 MCQs, 2 hours; 40% and 1:10 shortlist | High Court may conduct the same style of screening |
Written papers | Civil 100 + Criminal 100 + English 100 | Same three papers of 100 each |
English paper | Part-I Translation 30 + Part-II Essay, Grammar & Vocabulary 70 | Part-I Translation 40 + Part-II Legal essay 60 |
Qualifying mark in English | 50% in each part | 40% in each part |
Does English add to merit? | No | No |
Viva | 30 marks | 50 marks |
Written cut-off (Papers I & II) | OC/EWS: 60% each; BC: 55% each; SC/ST/PwD: 50% each | OC/EWS: 55% each + 60% aggregate; BC: 50% each + 55% aggregate; SC/ST/PwD: 45% each + 50% aggregate |
Medium | English, except translation | Same |
Academy note: Telangana is stricter on paper-wise percentages. Andhra Pradesh gives more weight to viva. Dual aspirants should write mains answers at TG standard and practise interview at AP depth.
Both States still list the old codes and the new criminal laws together. Treat BNS, BNSS and BSA as the working law. Keep IPC, CrPC and the Evidence Act for transition and comparison questions.
2. Common subjects — prepare once, use twice
This is the core file. Master it before you open any “State extra” notebook.
Civil and evidence

Criminal Rules of Practice
Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015

Excise Act, 1968 (State version)
Gaming Act, 1974 (State version)
Forest law of the State you are writing
English — common coreEnglish–Telugu and Telugu–English translation, plus an essay on a legal topic.
If this core is weak, extra statutes will not save the paper.
3. Extra for Telangana
If you are an AP-focused student adding TG, this is the additional stack.
Civil
Sale of Goods Act (TG lists it with Contract; AP Schedule–A does not list it separately)
Commercial Courts Act, 2015
Indian Succession Act, 1925
Laws on Hindu Adoption, Guardianship and Maintenance
Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987
Telangana Buildings (Lease, Rent and Eviction) Control Act, 1960
Criminal
Telangana Prohibition Act, 1995
Forest laws of Telangana and the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972
Mental Healthcare Act, 2017
Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956
Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967
EnglishGrammar and vocabulary are expressly tested in TG Part-II. AP Part-II is only the legal essay. TG also demands 50% in each English part.
4. Extra for Andhra Pradesh
If you are a TG-focused student adding AP, the civil list is actually narrower. The extras sit mostly on the criminal side.
CivilNo major extra central Act. Read the A.P. Land Encroachment Act, 1905 as notified for AP.
Criminal
Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006
Information Technology Act, 2000
A.P. Forest Act, 1967
AP Schedule–A for JCJ does not list Commercial Courts, the Succession Act, Rent Control, the Legal Services Authorities Act, or adoption/guardianship as standalone JCJ topics.
5. Dual-prep plan we use in class
Step 1 — One common core (about three-fourths of the work)CPC and Civil Rules, Contract, HMA, HSA, Easements, Specific Relief, Limitation, T.P. Act, Registration and Stamp, Evidence and BSA, CrPC and BNSS, IPC and BNS, NI Act (138 batch), DV Act, JJ Act, POCSO, Criminal Rules, Land Encroachment 1905, Excise 1968, Gaming 1974.
Step 2 — A thin “TG extra” fileCommercial Courts Act, Succession Act, HAMA and guardianship/maintenance, Legal Services Authorities Act, TG Rent Control Act 1960, Sale of Goods if not already covered under Contract, TG Prohibition Act, Wildlife Act plus TG forest law, Mental Healthcare Act, ITPA, UAPA, plus grammar and vocabulary drills.
Step 3 — A thin “AP extra” fileFood Safety and Standards Act 2006, IT Act 2000, A.P. Forest Act 1967.
Step 4 — State statutes are not interchangeableDo not treat Land Encroachment, Excise, Gaming and Forest as one common book. Use the TG list for TG and Schedule–A names for AP.
Step 5 — EnglishPractise both splits: 30+70 and 40+60. For TG, add grammar and vocabulary. Essays must stay on legal subjects.
Step 6 — Cut-offsWrite every Civil and Criminal answer as if the TG 60% paper-wise line applies. Prepare viva as if the AP 50-mark interview applies.
6. What you can park if time is short
You are writing mainly… | Lower priority unless time remains |
AP only | Commercial Courts Act, Succession Act, TG Rent Control, LSA Act, HAMA/guardianship as a separate topic, TG Prohibition, Mental Healthcare Act, ITPA, UAPA, Wildlife Act |
TG only | Food Safety and Standards Act 2006, IT Act 2000, A.P. Forest Act 1967 |
Do not park the common core.
7. How to use this in the next 30 days
Print Schedule–A and the TG notification syllabus on two pages and tick every Act.
Finish the common core first. Do not start “extra” Acts while CPC, Contract, Evidence and the new criminal codes are incomplete.
Make two one-page checklists: “TG only” and “AP only”. Revise those in the last 10–12 days before each State’s paper.
Write at least two full English papers in each pattern. Translation errors cost qualifying status even when law papers are strong.
For screening tests, mix old-code and new-code MCQs. Both High Courts have kept both sets on the list.
