Best Books for AP and Telangana JCJ 2026: Bare Acts, Commentaries and Previous Papers
Aravind Rao’s Judicial Academy | Hyderabad. If you searched “best books for JCJ”, “AP JCJ books 2026” or “Telangana JCJ previous year papers”, this is the short list we actually use. Notification, eligibility and the statute list are already on this site. The next search is always the same: which book, and which old paper.
Buy bare Acts before commentaries
AP JCJ 2026 (Notification No. 118/2026-RC) and the last Telangana JCJ written paper both test the statute, not an author’s chapter headings. Screening is 100 objective questions. Mains is issue, section, application. A commentary you have not opened is dead weight. One current bare Act per subject, marked in pencil, beats a stack of guides.
For Andhra Pradesh, keep both generations of the criminal law on the desk. Schedule-A names IPC, CrPC and the Evidence Act and also BNS, BNSS and BSA. Telangana’s last written syllabus still listed the older codes and did not name BNS, BNSS or BSA. If you write both States, do not throw the old bare Acts away.
The working shelf for AP and Telangana JCJ
CPC, 1908 — bare Act first. C.K. Takwani for the concepts that mains actually asks: res judicata, amendment, interim injunction, execution, appeals and revision.
Contract Act, 1872 and Specific Relief Act, 1963 — bare Acts, then Avtar Singh if a concept will not sit. Do not start with Pollock and Mulla.
Transfer of Property Act, 1882, Limitation Act, 1963, Easements Act, 1882 — bare Acts. Mark sections, not headlines.
Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 and Hindu Succession Act, 1956 — bare Acts. Paras Diwan only for a topic you keep missing in tests.
Registration Act, 1908, Indian Stamp Act, 1899, A.P. Land Encroachment Act, 1905 — bare Acts plus the State adaptation you are writing.
Evidence Act, 1872 and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 — both bare Acts. Batuk Lal’s BSA edition is enough commentary. BSA is on the civil list and the criminal list in AP.
IPC and BNS, CrPC and BNSS — side-by-side bare Acts. Kelkar’s BNSS edition if you want one procedure book. A mapping table is compulsory: murder is BNS 103, not 302.
Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 (sections 138 to 148-A), Domestic Violence Act, 2005, Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, POCSO, IT Act, Food Safety and Standards Act — bare Acts. These are short and repeatedly asked.
A.P. Excise Act, 1968, A.P. Gaming Act, 1974, A.P. Forest Act, 1967, and the Telangana extras (Rent Control, Prohibition, Sale of Goods, Succession, Commercial Courts) — only the State you are writing, from the official syllabus, not from a national guidebook.
Civil Rules of Practice and Criminal Rules of Practice of the State — local. A Delhi or UP guide will not save you here.
What to skip
Constitution commentaries. Neither AP Schedule-A nor the last Telangana JCJ written syllabus makes the Constitution a paper. Read only the articles a CPC or criminal problem actually needs.
Three books on the same Act. One bare Act, one thin commentary, old papers.
Guides that have not been reset for BNS, BNSS and BSA if you are writing Andhra Pradesh.
Current-affairs compilations as a substitute for section reading. Screening still rewards the section.
Previous papers: the only trend that repeats
Telangana’s last cycle is the freshest public paper in this region. Screening was on 8 March 2026. Mains was on 20 June 2026 (Civil and English) and 21 June 2026 (Criminal). Our Paper-I and Paper-II analyses on this site are the working map: CPC and Evidence carried the civil paper; procedure carried the criminal paper. Andhra Pradesh has not held this 2026 screening yet. Use older AP JCJ papers from the High Court archive at aphc.gov.in, and use the Telangana 2026 papers as the nearest pattern — then adjust for AP’s extra criminal statutes and for BNS, BNSS and BSA.
Screening: 40 timed MCQs a day from one Act, not a mixed mock every morning. Note the section you missed, not the option letter.
Mains: one problem a day in the format the June 2026 Telangana paper used — facts, the section, what the court can do, and the one case or illustration that decides it.
Old IPC or CrPC questions: answer once under the old number and once under the BNS or BNSS number. That is the AP 2026 trap.
Do not treat a coaching memory-based paper as official. If the PDF is not on tshc.gov.in or aphc.gov.in, mark it as practice only.
A four-week shelf, not a shopping list
Week 1 — CPC bare Act plus Takwani on res judicata, amendment, injunction, execution. Ten screening MCQs a night.
Week 2 — Evidence Act and BSA side by side: relevancy, burden, electronic records, hostile witness. BSA is on both AP papers.
Week 3 — IPC/BNS and CrPC/BNSS. Murder, hurt, theft, cheating, bail, charge, discharge, complaint cases, section 138 NI Act.
Week 4 — State Acts and Paper-III. Translation and the legal essay are qualifying in AP (40% in each part). They do not add to merit, and they still eliminate you.
Statute lists: AP vs Telangana JCJ syllabus.
New codes: BNS, BNSS and BSA together.
English filter: Paper-III translation and legal essay.
Pattern and marks: AP JCJ exam pattern 2026. Applications close 26 October 2026, 11:59 PM, only at aphc.gov.in.
The 12-month online Prelims and Mains batch (7 December 2026 to 31 December 2027, Rs. 50,000 including GST) uses this shelf: bare Acts, one commentary where it earns its place, and previous papers as the test, not as a souvenir.
